    The Campbell Brothers: John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme

    Location: Walker Art Center, 1750 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55403
    Date: February 26, 2015

    Masters of a little-known American musical tradition, the Campbell Brothers have helped create a unique steel guitar–driven sound called sacred steel: African American gospel with electric steel guitars and soaring vocals. February 2015 is the 50th anniversary of John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme, a seminal recording as well as a declaration that Coltrane’s expansive musical innovations had become intertwined with his religious devotion. To mark the occasion, the Campbell Brothers revisit the work on their signature slide guitars, with particular attention to the album’s transcendent spiritual message.

    Make It New, Again: Collecting History

    In the 1930s, American poet Ezra Pound famously encouraged modern artists to “make it new.” Modernists heeded the call through abstraction, 12-tone music, collage, photomontage, and other experimental approaches to the visual arts, film, dance, and architecture.

Further complicating the situation is the "family business": Albin and Georges run a drag nightclub in St. Tropez where Albin is the star performer. Georges reluctantly agrees to masquerade as "normal" when he meets the family of the bride-to-be. But Albin has other plans, with hilarious results
