In 1834, brothers Gideon and Samuel Pond journeyed from Connecticut to Minnesota after answering a call to missionary work during America’s Second Great Awakening. They worked alongside Chief Cloud Man’s Dakota community, first near present-day Bde Maka Ska and Lake Harriet before relocating to the Minnesota River bluff in 1843. There, they established Oak Grove Mission, where they served as missionaries, farming instructors and community members while living and working among the Dakota people.
