| Fort Snelling State Park
For a refreshing urban escape in the Twin Cities Metro region, visit Fort Snelling State Park. Near where the Minnesota River meets the Mississippi, you’ll find a variety of outdoor activities as well as the historic Fort Snelling, a 19th-century military outpost.
In winter, outdoor recreational activities at Fort Snelling State Park include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and dog sledding. While summer at the park means hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing on Gun Club Lake and swimming at the beach. Fort Snelling, Minnesota also offers excellent birdwatching, year-round naturalist programs, interpretive exhibits at its visitor center, picnic shelters, playgrounds, a nine-hole golf course and polo grounds. Its trails connect Fort Snelling State Park to Minnehaha Park and the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge.
The 2,931-acre Fort Snelling, Minnesota State Park opened in 1962.
Fort Snelling State Park Dates & Hours of Operation Fort Snelling State Park is a day-use park open year-round. The visitor center nature store opens from 8 am till 4 pm, with special hours during the summer months. Historic Fort Snelling is open from May through October, as is the nearby Sibley House Historic Site, a three-mile drive from Fort Snelling State Park.
